Nicholas Garrett and Harrison Mitchell are experienced Consultants and the founding Directors of RCS. Simon Gilbert is RCS' Director of New Business and Senior Consultant. Marie Lintzer is a Consultant and Research Analyst at RCS. Coming from diverse backgrounds, we met through our work on natural resources. Our own work is complimented by the work of a number of associates, who are both international experts and local consultants in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America. Nicholas Garrett is a Director of RCS and a Research Associate with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He is a widely published specialist in the research, in-depth analysis and assessment of economic and political systems as well as social structures at the regional, state and community levels. He specialises in natural resources sectors and has significant experience in regional and state good natural resource governance and economic corridor development through his work on practical strategy and policy development for multilateral development organisations, the private sector, governments and multi-stakeholder initiatives. He also has substantial field experience in natural resources sectors with thorough engagement experience with sector stakeholders, ranging from mining communities, both from his work on impact assessments, as well as ASM community based research to mining companies, civil society and Governments. Nicholas is a recognised leading global expert on the DR Congo’s, Liberia’s and Rwanda’s mining sector, but he has successfully used his transferrable skills set in other sectors and geographies. He is able to work in English, French, as well as German and Spanish. His clients include the US, UK, German and Dutch Governments, The World Bank, GTZ, The EITI, The ICGLR, Moto Goldmines, LGL Gold, AngloGold Ashanti, the LSE, and others. He will finish his PhD on the DR Congo’s mining sector in 2010 and he will add Portuguese to his proficient language set by November 2010.

 

Harrison Mitchell is director at RCS and a researcher specialising in investigations of corruption, beneficiation, politically exposed persons, commodities and minerals. He has worked for the Financial Times as a senior researcher, Global Witness - a leading anti-corruption watchdog, and since co-founding Resource Consulting Services, for a number of well-known organisations including DFID and the London School of Economics. Professional landmarks include publishing groundbreaking investigations on militarised mining for the FT and RCS, working as a researcher and writer on several investigations into corruption and conflict in Central Asia and Africa, and performing country audits of China and Lebanon for the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme for Rough Diamonds. Harrison is experienced in complex case management required for larger investigations and currently works on cases for the private, public and non-profit sectors. Harrison has worked in Africa, the Middle East, South America and Asia in a number of different countries. He is currently completing an MSc in Sociology (Human Rights) at the London School of Economics; his professional training includes libel training in the publication of investigations and operating in high risk environments.

 

Simon Gilbert works as a Senior Consultant and Director of New Business with RCS. Simon has spent 10 years working as Manager of International Relations in De Beers’ External and Corporate Affairs Department. He is a respected and highly experienced Corporate Affairs professional with extensive experience in delivering against challenging targets. He has extensive knowledge and understanding of building cross sector partnership projects with business, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and governments. He is an accomplished networker with the ability to create, develop and maintain a wide range of stakeholder relationships in diverse cultural and political situations. He is highly experienced in enterprise approaches to development, the issue of ‘conflict resources’, as well as all aspects of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme and other global processes. He is a persuasive negotiator with keen commercial acumen and proven integrity. He is an experienced communicator and presenter, is media trained with experience in broadcast and print mediums, working with a wide range of trade, national and international publications.

 

Marie Lintzer is a Consultant and Research Analyst at RCS. Since joining RCS in 2009, Marie has conducted quantitative and qualitative analysis of the mining sectors in sub-Saharan Africa with a specific focus on the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector. She has conducted field-work in DR Congo, Rwanda and Burundi and has worked as lead researcher and analyst on projects for the World Bank, the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the German Government (BGR and GTZ). This work has included looking at constraints to growth in the mining sector in DRC and devising a strategy to increase transparency in the mineral trade in Africa’s Great Lakes region. Marie studied law in Paris and the University of Oxford and holds an MSc in Public Management and Governance from the London School of Economics (LSE). She is able to work in English, French and Spanish.
